1916 Stories of Russian Folk-Life Donald A Mackenzie 1st Ed Gresham Illustrated

A rare and evocative 1916 first edition of "Stories of Russian Folk-Life" by the renowned Scottish folklorist Donald A. Mackenzie. Published by The Gresham Publishing Company during the First World War, this book was part of a movement to share the culture and heroic legends of the Russian people with the British public.

Fascinating Context:
Published just one year before the Russian Revolution of 1917, this volume serves as a "time capsule" of pre-revolutionary Russian life, covering everything from the legends of the Tsar and the ancient 'Bogaturs' (heroes) to the daily struggles and customs of the peasantry.

Condition Report (Important - Please Read):

• Illustrations: Includes several atmospheric full-page plates. Please Note: The iconic plate "Petrushka holds the wolves at bay" has become physically detached from the binding and is sitting loosely within the book. The page itself is in good condition with no tears.

• Binding: The text block remains firm and the original red decorative cloth boards are square.

• Interior: Features a neat pen inscription on the title page. There is light foxing (age-related brown spotting) to the early and late pages, which is typical for paper from the WWI era.

• Exterior: The red cloth shows some minor age-toning/sun-fading to the spine and minor shelf wear to the corners.

Despite the loose plate, this remains a highly collectible copy of a scarce Mackenzie title. The decorative Art Nouveau-style binding makes it an excellent shelf piece for collectors of Gresham or Blackie & Son series.
